New Era Japan – soft messenger caps

Finally, a rad-looking umpire hat that wont smell like a rotting animal (they’re washable).  New Era Japan is definitely one step ahead of the game.

Embarcadero Drummer

Since I was a little girl, I remember seeing this guy around the city (usually in Union Square) playing the drums on buckets, pans, and anything else he could find that made the right noise when hit with a drumstick.  He’s still around, and has expanded his resources.  He was spotted at the Islands a few weeks back while we were shooting, and I thought I’d post a clip…

Kings & Queens – 30 Seconds to Mars

An homage to my past life…

…30 Seconds to Mars was one of the first bands I ever came in personal contact with when I first started working at EMI back in 2002. I remember being so disappointed by Jared Leto’s oversized ego after adoring him as Jordan Catalano for all those years. Despite his diva-esque nature, 30 Seconds to Mars has done pretty well for themselves, and I’m actually really impressed with their new album, “This is War.”  Leto’s vocals, while always pretty strong, have matured significantly, and he finally cut off that God-Awful mane.

This video for their first single, “Kings & Queens,” is, in my opinion, amazing.  The video quality is phenomenal, and I can’t help but love it for the LA shots (especially the Griffith Park Observatory that was a part of my daily surroundings for 6 years), AND the Critical-Mass theatrics through the City of Angels.

Conversion

Thomas and I spent the greater part of our Saturday today at Freewheel Bike Shop on Hayes, converting my Bridgestone T700 Touring Bike into a fixie/freewheel flip-flop conversion.  Dustin @ Freewheel did the body work on the frame, and Thomas spent 5 hours at the shop replacing ALL of the other components…

I kept it relatively low budget, as this is still my “learning” bike to get more comfortable on the fixies before investing in a legitimate Japanese track frame, but I still dialed it in with some decent upgrades….Switched from the stock dropbars to some Japanese rise bars with some All City black and white starred grips…Opted for the Deep-V Velocity rims and Vittoria Randonneur tires…To pay homage to my favorite color scheme (black, white & pink), I got the pink Odyssey pedals that turn pink in the sunlight…Cadence straps…a SF Moma black and silver sparkled saddle, and a white Beetle Japanese light to finish.

Thomas put in some serious hours, and completed his first full conversion successfully!  Also, huge thanks to Dustin and Travis @ Freewheel…they rock…bring your bike there.

NEW PEOPLE, SF — J-Pop Arrives in Full Force!

This past weekend San Francisco’s Japantown celebrated the grand opening of the new J-Pop (Japanese Pop Culture) multiplex, NEW PEOPLE.

Located at 1746 Post St. in San Francisco, New People features 4 stories of jam-packed Japanese pop culture gems, ranging from food, Japanese films, Japanese crafts and toys, Japanese fashion, and Japanese art.
The glass-fronted building welcomes visitors in with the clean modern decor that boasts the colorful playfulness of contemporary Japanese style. As we entered the basement floor, clusters of young girls dressed up in full Harajuku style outfits were gathered in tightly-knit gossip circles, their pigtails and rosy cheeks paying further tribute to their overly-exaggerated schoolgirl fantasy style. (We later learned that these girls were a part of New People’s grand opening event that spanned this entire last weekend in Japantown).
The first floor (1F), which is also the main entrance, boasts a bright and spacious lounge area with a small cafe serving snacks, drinks, and SF’s own Blue Bottle Coffee.

The main level (M) is an almost overwhelming array of Japanese Pop Culture goods: toys, books, gadgets, accessories…

Floor 2 (F2) is an impressive collection of uniquely Japanese clothing brands, sneakers, and special fashion collections…

The third Floor (F3) is the Superfrog Gallery, featuring art exhibits by well-known and well-established Japanese artists in mediums popular in contemporary Japanese art.  The Gallery was closed when we ventured up, but we caught a preview of some resin pieces in the entry to the gallery…

In addition to the art in the gallery, the stairway has simple but appealing black and white line paintings on the walls from bottom to top…

Although we didn’t venture downstairs, the Basement level is where New People will be premiering the hottest new films in Japan.
