Brooklyn-based tattoo artist, Scott Campbell, created these laser-cut designs on Dollar Bills. It really doesnt get any sicker than this.

There’s something intimately intriguing to me about seeing the insides of an artist’s sketchbook. Everyone loves a finished piece, of course, but sometimes I find the internal (and, in this case, external) process that leads to a completed work of art to be more interesting. I could look for hours, but here are a few of my favorites by illustrator/painter, James Jean. What attracts me most about his work is the juxtaposition of abstraction and realism, a balance I have always struggled to find in my own creative process.
La Robot de Madera (the wooden robot) is a street artist from Valparaiso, Chile who creates murals, street paintings, and other public art around the world.

I was initially drawn to Kelly Allen’s simplistic, minimalist gouache paintings/collages, but then delved a little deeper to find some of her more colorful, complex mixed media and acrylic pieces.

Over the summer, Thomas and I were lucky enough to study under Ben Venom, a Southern-born artist who studied in San Francisco, and now shows quite prolifically around the Bay Area.
While Ben’s expertise lies in illustration and silk-screening (we studied alternative processes under him, learning techniques such as Cyanotpye and Screen-Printing), he has also been doing quite a bit of work sewing stylized quilts out of vintage Heavy Metal T-shirts in his studio in San Francisco’s Mission District. Ben has been making the rounds throughout the Art Community this year, with several shows around the state (as well as one scheduled for early 2010 at the brand new Phoenicia Association in Downtown Phoenix).
Check out some of his work, as well as interviews and updates on upcoming shows:

As someone who is drawn almost exclusively to portraiture in every visual art form, I was instantly drawn to Ben Tour’s work, not only for his technique and use of texture, but for his unique way of using the elements of his media to express the individuality of each of his subjects.

Keeping in stride with my current obsession with Berlin, I discovered this painter, Jonas Burgert, whose work drew me in instantly for his use of color and unique representation of humanity. Burgert shows regularly in Berlin, and is currently showing at the MCA Denver.
